INTRODUCTION

At the beginning of eighties, collecting activities of germplasm of horticultural crops begun, resulting in the stablishment of the Genebank of the Polythechnical University of Valencia. More than 7000 accesions belonging to horticultural species are currently stored and mantained, including landraces and wild species.

The increase of research lines and reseachers give rise to the need of the stablishment of a Research Institute to carry out in a coordinated way the objectives of germplasm conservation and improvement of horticultural species. Thus, the Center for the Conservation and Breeding of the Agrodiverdity (COMAV), was created on May-27-1999.

THE COMAV
OBJECTIVES
The research lines in development at the COMAV are based in the conservation and use of genetic resources:

  • Conservation of Genetic Resources
The Genebank of the Polytechnic University of Valencia holds more than 7000 accessions of vegetalble crops. Activities carried out are the following:
-Collecting, Conservation, Regeneration, Characterization, Evaluation and Documentation.
-Analysis of the morphological and molecular variability.
-Establishment of nuclear collections on Lycopersicon and Cucurbit genus.

  • Use of genetic resources and development of improved new varieties
Breeding of horticultural crops are made by employing classical breeding methods and also integrating new biotechnologies. All of the research lines are based in the exploitation of genetic resouces stores in the genebank. The aim is:

    - To contribute to a sustainable agriculture, making possible the use of traditional varieties geneticcally improved.
    - To facilitate the profitability of agricultural enterprises with regard to the development of new varieties
    - To provide a source of seeds to ecological farmers
    - To answer the demand of diversification of the markets with the introduction and breeding of new crops

Particular emphasis is given to:
- The development of tomato and pepper varieties resistant to viral diseases
- The development of melon varieties resistant to fungal diseases.
- Breeding for nutritive and organoleptic quality in tomato
