Cucurbits Working Group

DSC02846 pequeThe Cucurbits Working Group was established in 2003 with the aim of coordinate activities on genetic resources of some Cucurbitaceae species, mainly cucumber, melons, watermelon, gourds, pumpkin, zucchini and other minor cultivated and wild Cucurbits. The WG is composed at present by twenty six members. The main achievement of the WG was the establishment of the European Central Cucurbits Database held at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. Passport data of more than 25.000 accessions and characterization data of 1223, including images are included in the ECCUDB. The WG has also developed minimum descriptor lists for characterization of melon, cucumber, watermelon and Cucurbita species. Guidelines for conservation, regeneration and characterization activities on cucurbits crops have been developed and agreed by the WG. The level of safety duplication of the European collections members of the WG has been assessed and increased, promoting the implementation of black boxes. The WG is involved in the AEGIS project and is making progress on the selection of the Most Appropriated Accessions that will take part of the European Collection.
