Group Breeding for Resistance to Viral Diseases in Solanaceae Group

Intro mejora virosisOur research group has its research centered in breeding for resistance to viral diseases in Solanaceae crops. One of the main activities is the identification of sources of resistance to diseases produced by viruses and that have an important economic impact in tomato, pepper, and eggplant crops.

Once the sources of resistance have been identified we determine the inheritance of the resistance trait. This is a necessary step to proceed to its introduction in plant material of tomato, pepper, and eggplant with agronomic interest.

The final objective is to develop varieties of the aforementioned crops resistant to viral diseases and make them available to the productive sector. At present we work in the breeding for resistance to the following viral diseases:

  • Viral disease caused by the Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in tomato.
  • Viral disease caused by the Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in pepper.
  • Viral disease caused by the Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) in tomato.
  • Viral disease caused by the Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) in tomato.
